In response to emails from Friends of the Earth supporters Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has sent the following reply.

"Thank you for your email.

As you correctly state, the Programme for Government does contain a commitment for climate change legislation that will reflect our EU targets. The Legislative Programme also contains a commitment that climate Change legislation will be published in 2012. This remains a government commitment.

Work on climate change legislation will be progressed by the Sub Cabinet on Climate Change in accordance with its terms of reference. The aim is to deliver on climate change legislation in 2012.

Yours sincerely,

EAMON GILMORE, T.D.
TANAISTE & MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE
LABOUR PARTY LEADER "

It is welcome to see Eamon Gilmore re-affiming his commitment to making sure that climate legislation is passed in 2012. What we need to see now is a clear timeline on when the draft bill will be published and when it can be expected for consideration by the Environment commitee.
