Newswires are reporting this morning that the US is closs to agreeing to "dialogue" under the UN Climate Convention as long as it "will not open any negotiations leading to new commitments."

The move comes after former US president Clinton stole the show on Friday, last scheduled day of the conference, in an address to a packed conference hall which ratcheted up the pressure on the US not to walk away from multilateral talks.

Meanwhile Russia is said to be holding up agreement under the Kyoto Protocol, to which the US is not a party, to open formal negiations on a new round of carbon cuts to kick in when the current round is completed in 2012.
