Supporting Community Rights and Resilience
Friends of the Earth national groups around the world work with communities trying to exercise their rights in the face of unaccountable corporate power and unresponsive or complicit state authorities. These communities are often resisting the environmental and human rights impacts of the mining, oil and gas industries.
One of the longest running parts of this work has been communties living near Shell's refineries, depots and pipelines from Nigeria to the Philipines and the USA. This alliance produced "The Other Shell Reports" below and works now as the Shell Accountability Campaign. A new report is due later in 2010.
The last two include sections on Shell and the Corrib Gas project in Mayo.
In 2007 an international monitoring delegation organized by Friends of the Earth International visited Mayo. Their report, which warns of a breakdown of confidence in the Gardai, is online here.
