Briefing for Budget 2019

Posted on October 28, 2019 by Claudia Tormey

In advance of Budget Day on October 8th, we prepared a briefing on key discussion points related to proposals to increase the carbon tax in Budget 2020.

In response to the Government’s announcement to allocate the revenue raised from the tax increase to climate action measures, this Coalition called on the Government to enshrine ring fencing of the tax intake into legislation.

Stop Climate Chaos also called on the Government to follow up on the recommendation made earlier this year from the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action that it carry out a review on the impacts of energy poverty as a result of the tax hike, and implement the appropriate supports that will minimise the burden on those most affected.

Busy time in the Coalition kicked off again in September as the new Dáil session began, and as thousands of young people across Ireland came together to mobilise as part of the youth-led Global Climate Strike on September 20th, members of Government, including the Taoiseach, travelled to New York to attend the high-level UN Summit on Climate Change in New York.

‘Preventing irreversible climate disruption is the race of our lives and for our lives’ were the words used by the UN Secretary-General in calling on all leaders to come to New York with statements on how they intend to increase ambition on climate action in advance of next year when the Paris Agreement will come into force.

Posted on July 29, 2019 by Claudia Tormey

CEM Bill Protest.JPG

As secretariat members of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition, we have been very active over the last number of months, campaigning for strong climate action and legislation. Here's a summary!

Climate Action plan

While eagerly awaiting the Climate Action plan, we put together five tests or indicators of how serious the Government is taking climate action seriously, and effective the Plan will be in bringing down emissions pollution. The Government’s new Climate Action Plan was published in mid-June to much fanfare, and in July, we published our assessment of the Plan, in collaboration with the Environmental Pillar. A summary of our report is available here and the full report is available here.
