YFOEE Summer Camp 2018

The Young Friends of the Earth Europe Summer Camp took place in Cyprus this year between the 3rd and 9th of September. High up in the pine forests of the Troodos mountains the international group of 55 young people shared stories of resistance in many different contexts, depicting the differences and commonalities in our struggles. Focusing on a theme of intersectionality, the camp provided a fertile space for both seasoned and new activists to explore this essential component of environmentalism.

You know the environment is important, otherwise why would you be reading this? Perhaps you have an inkling that it's much more important than most people seem to think...but you don't really know how to articulate the issues. You know the general assumptions of society are at least partly to blame;

  • That the climate is changing and it's hurting those who are most vulnerable the most
  • That we're plundering the Earth's resources for economic gain
  • That we are becoming more and more detached from where our food comes from
  • That the amount of plastic we're creating is unsustainable
  • That endless economic growth on a finite planet is untenable
  • That there is an element of injustice inherent in all environmental and climate issues

“Ban fracking!” A creative call from young people in fracking affected communities

A group of young activists aged 12-18 from fracking affected communities in the north-west of Ireland have highlighting the dangers of fracking through artworks created during the month long Eco/Art/Action summer programme.

The programme was a collaboration between Young Friends of the Earth, local anti-fracking group Love Leitrim and artists from the Leitrim Sculpture Centre.

Taking place over the course of two day workshops and a weekend residential, it aimed to explore fracking in its local and global context and create a space for young people to make their voices heard in debates around the issue.
