In the words of civil rights activist, Audre Lorde, “there is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we don’t live single-issue lives”.

Over the last couple of years, Friends of the Earth has been working to embed our struggle against the climate crisis within broader struggles for social justice and sustainable development. We’ve built relationships with amazing groups and organizations whose work to tackle poverty and injustice is connected to - and impacted by - our work on climate change.

These relationships have prepared the ground for some exciting, collaborative projects. Last year, we produced a Shared Vision for a Just Recovery from COVID-19 with over 50 organisations from all sectors of Irish civil society, from trade unions to women’s and youth advocates, to community and homelessness organizations.

Now we’re taking this collaborative work to the next level. We’re delighted to announce that we’re organising an exciting "Just Recovery" conference on behalf of Coalition 2030 - an alliance of organisations from the international development, social inclusion, anti-poverty, trade union and academic sectors that is working to uphold Ireland’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by the end of the decade.

This online conference will explore how the Sustainable Development Goals can be used to guide Ireland’s recovery from COVID-19.

Regster for the Just Recovery Conference

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the world upside down. It has exposed major weaknesses in Ireland’s economy and health services but also deep-seated inequalities. The most vulnerable people are being hit hardest, both in Ireland and abroad.

The Coalition 2030 Just Recovery Conference takes place at a critical time - as the Government looks towards long-term recovery from the pandemic. Ireland has big choices to make. Will we choose a new, more sustainable path that creates a more just, equal world for all? Or will we revert to business as before, driving inequalities and further damaging the health of both people and planet? There is so much at stake. And so many issues to unpack and explore.

COVID-19 has seriously jeopardised progress on the Sustainable Development Goals - while also making their achievement all the more urgent and necessary. Keynote speakers and leading civil society voices will help us explore how these Goals can be used to create more open, just societies flourishing within the ecological boundaries of our planet.

The conference will also conclude Coalition 2030’s Just Recovery Fortnight which features a series of activities from member organisations related to the Sustainable Development Goals and a Just Recovery.

You can register and get further information about the conference on the event page - keep an eye out as we announce our top speakers in the coming days!
