Tomorrow, Saturday April 13th, is the big day - we’re launching the next wave of action on supermarket plastic packaging!

57 local actions with over 330 individuals have registered on the Sick of Plastic online platform, ready to Shop and Drop from this weekend.

The action is easy – anyone can take part!

Just do your grocery shop as normal but remove the excess plastic from your purchases after payment and place unwanted plastic in the bins provided in-store.

We now have 17,000 names on our plastic petition but want to hit 20,000 after this weekend. Groups all across the country will be collecting signatures outside supermarkets - and you can help gather signatures too!

Simply download and print the petition here at this link, ask 10 friends or family members to sign and send it to us by email or post. This is a simple action you can take this weekend.

Wouter Desmit, Sick of Plastic Dublin 8 local organiser, shares some of his experience from last year’s shop and drop below;

“Last year we campaigned in front of Lidl on Thomas street with about 10 volunteers throughout the day. All of us felt energized and we got a lot of positive reactions from customers.

"I noticed most shoppers had their own reusable shopping bags, which was a pleasant surprise. It’s the plastic covered items within these reusable bags that we need to tackle.

“We are happy that Lidl recently decided to place recycle bins in their shops. But that does not solve the initial problem of the excessive usage and production of single used plastic packaging in the retail sector.

“Everyone knows the famous words reduce, reuse, recycle. The retail industry is responsible for reducing waste as well, not only for recycling. It’s everyone’s responsibility to tackle this issue.”

Wouter is at it again this weekend, with 30 volunteers signed up to join the action in Dublin 8!
