The Board of Directors
Friends of the Earth Ireland is governed by a Board of Directors. The current members of the Board are as follows.
Marion Briggs, Chairperson
Marion Briggs is a climate activist with a focus on environmental finance.
She worked previously with Friends of the Earth as the National Coordinator for the Sick of Plastic Day of Action, and has gone to the COP (the annual international climate conference) for the last two years on behalf of Friends of the Earth.
The Board Members
Ciara Kirrane, Secretary
Ciara Kirrane joined the Board in 2016, after working for Friends of the Earth and Stop Climate Chaos for 3 years prior to that. She previously worked in the overseas aid sector, focusing on the impact of climate change on farmers in Africa and Latin America. She holds a degree in Social Science from NUI Maynooth and a Masters in Criminology from DIT. She is the Casework, Information and Policy Officer with the Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas.
Sarah O'Suilleabhain, Treasurer
Sarah O'Suilleabhain currently works in the non-profit sector and has a background in corporate finance and relationship management.
She currently lives by the sea in Co. Dublin with husband and three small children, down to just one in cloth nappies!
David Joyce, Board Member
David Joyce is Equality and International officer for the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
Among his work is the promotion of a Just Transition to a carbon free planet, one that involved the voice of workers and communities in the structural transformation we need to save our planet. “There are no jobs on a dead planet”.
Celeste Roche, Board Member
Celeste Roche works in accounting, compliance and finance for Irish financial and property companies.
She has a background in volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul, Gaze Film Festival and helplines. Celeste is a member of the Governance Committee.
Valery Molay, Board Member
Valery Molay is a social justice activist with a focus on climate justice.
She has a background in environmental policy and has dedicated most of her life advocating for greater youth participation at all level of decision making. She would like to promote the use of the term eudaimonia rather than the pursuit of happiness.
David Heller, Board Member
David Heller has worked for 15 years with the Friends of the Earth federation in various roles at local, national and European level. He has more than 20 years experience as a trainer and facilitator, building capacity for social and environmental justice with grassroots groups and NGOs.
Emma Lane-Spollen, Board Member
Emma Lane-Spollen joined the Board of Friends of the Earth in January 2021, having worked in a voluntary capacity with Friends of the Earth on the OneFuture Campaign for the General Election 2020. Emma is an independent consultant focused on strengthening social impact of NGO’s and Philanthropy. She has extensive experience in strategy development, advocacy, impact measurement, planning and finance. Prior roles include CEO of the Tomar Trust and Deputy CEO of the One Foundation. Emma is a qualified management accountant with extensive Board experience, currently also serving on the Board of Benefacts and Educate Together.
Colm Ó Cuanacháin, Board Member
Colm Ó Cuanacháin worked as a primary school teacher and principal in Gaelscoileanna and Educate Together schools for twelve years. He later specialised in human rights education and worked in human rights and development for almost twenty years. He was director of Comhlámh and worked as Secretary General of Amnesty International in Dublin. He moved abroad initially with ActionAid International doing two years as International Head of Campaigns, before a ten-year stint on the Senior Management Team at Amnesty International where he held different briefs including as Acting Secretary General. Since returning to Ireland in 2020, Colm has worked as Education Director with Fighting Words, based in DCU. Colm has wide experience in organisational development and governance, having served on a range of boards at international and national level.
