Water

Ireland's water environment is under increasing pressure from pollution by:
- Sewage works pumping out raw and poorly treated human waste
- Landfill sites leaking toxic sludge into groundwater
- Factories discharging a cocktail of chemicals into rivers and loughs
- Pesticides, fertilisers and slurry running off farms causing fish kills and nutrient enrichment
- Incinerators producing tonnes of poisonous ash which has to be dumped in landfill sites.
Friends of the Earth will be campaigning for National and European environmental protection laws to be fully enforced.
The polluter pays principle must be enshrined in law and Government policy.
